Getting to Port Douglas

Arrive into Cairns by plane, train or bus.  The nearest airport to Port Douglas is Cairns Airport, located approximately 70 kilometres south of the town.  You can rent a car from the airport, book a shuttle service, or take a taxi to Port Douglas.  

The scenic drive from Cairns to Port Douglas takes about one hour along the spectacular Captain Cook Highway.  Port Douglas is at the centre of the Great Barrier Reef Drive, the most picturesque stretch of highway in the region. It hugs the coast from Cairns to Cape Tribulation, winding along with rainforest on one side and the ocean on the other. It’s also the closest town to Tropical North Queensland’s twin UNESCO World Heritage sites – the Daintree Rainforest and the Great Barrier Reef.

In August you can expect average temperatures between 17-27°C (63-80°F), low rainfall (26mm / 1in) and moderate sea conditions with water temperatures between 22-24°C (71-75°F).  Overall, there is great marine life activity with plenty to see, Minke and Humpback Whales typically migrate through Port Douglas between Jun-Aug.
